How the commission process works

Transparent, collaborative stages guide you from first conversation to final installation, ensuring the commissioned work feels deeply rooted in your context and vision.

  1. 01

    Initial inquiry & consultation

Share your space, intentions, budget, and preferred timelines. We review reference imagery, architectural drawings, or mood directions to understand the role the artwork will play.

Outcomes: clarified objectives, site considerations, and commissioning scope.

  2. 02

    Concept development & sketches

We explore multiple directions through conceptual sketches, reference collages, and written narratives, articulating form, materiality, palette, and approximate scale.

Includes: up to two refinement rounds to align with your feedback.

  3. 03

    Material selection & technical planning

Together we confirm core materials—such as metal, wood, resin, or textiles—surface treatments, fixings, and installation requirements, ensuring longevity and safety for the context.

Deliverables: material swatches where relevant, production schedule, and itemised quote.

  4. 04

    Making, progress updates & reviews

The work is realised in our Leeds studio. You receive scheduled visual updates—studio photographs, detail shots, and short notes—so you can follow the evolution of the piece.

Checkpoints: key milestones where small adjustments may still be made.

  5. 05

    Installation & handover

We coordinate delivery and, where required, on-site installation in collaboration with your contractor or facilities team, ensuring the work is safely integrated into its final setting.

You receive care guidelines and documentation for provenance and insurance.

Consultation & collaboration

The commissioning journey begins with conversation. We listen carefully—to your site, your stories, your audiences—and translate those insights into a proposal that feels specific rather than generic.

  • In-depth discussion of spatial qualities, existing design language, and how the work should be experienced.
  • Review of references (artworks, materials, architecture, photography) to understand your visual vocabulary.
  • Alignment on budget, approximate dimensions, installation constraints, and any access considerations.
  • Clear outline of next steps, timelines, and what is required from you at each stage.

Materials & techniques

Materiality sits at the heart of LOOP & FORM LTD's practice. Each commission is an opportunity to explore how surfaces catch light, how textures invite touch, and how structure can feel both grounded and weightless.

Metal, wood & structural elements

We work with steel, aluminium, and hardwoods for frameworks, armatures, and sculptural forms, balancing structural integrity with a refined, minimal presence.

  • Powder-coated, patinated, or raw finishes tailored to your environment.
  • Engineered fixings to meet safety requirements, especially in public or high-traffic spaces.

Resin, plaster & surface layering

Translucent and opaque surfaces are built through poured resin, plaster, and pigments that echo geological strata or atmospheric fields.

  • Layered pours for depth and subtle colour shifts.
  • Embedded fragments and textures that reward close viewing.

Textiles & soft interventions

In acoustically sensitive or intimate spaces, textiles offer a softer counterpoint—hanging forms, woven elements, and stitched surfaces that absorb sound and soften edges.

  • Custom-dyed fabrics to harmonise with interiors.
  • Modular panels that can be reconfigured over time.

Signature mixed-media approaches

Many commissions combine multiple materials, negotiating between the industrial and the hand-made. This hybrid language creates works that feel both precise and deeply tactile.

  • Contrasts between matte and reflective surfaces.
  • Interplay of weight, suspension, and negative space.

Artistic approach to commissioned work

Every commission is grounded in context-aware design, allowing the work to feel inevitable in its setting while maintaining bold, independent presence.

Context first

We read each site carefully—its architecture, rhythms of movement, light conditions, and acoustic qualities—to determine where an artwork should assert itself and where it should recede.

Bold originality

Rather than replicating existing works, commissions are developed as distinct responses, ensuring your piece holds its own voice and narrative.

Attention to texture & scale

From intimate wall pieces to multi-storey installations, we calibrate detail, proportion, and surface so the work resonates both up close and at a distance.

Durability & care

Material choices, fixings, and finishes are specified for longevity, with clear care guidance to help the work age gracefully within its environment.

Commissioning for public spaces, commercial interiors & private collectors

LOOP & FORM LTD works across scales and sectors, adapting our studio practice to the specific needs of public, commercial, and domestic environments.

Public & commercial commissions

For atriums, hotels, offices, and cultural venues, commissions often act as anchors—works that orient people within a space and shape first impressions.

  • Large-scale installations and sculptural interventions designed with safety and maintenance in mind.
  • Integration with lighting design, wayfinding, and existing brand or curatorial language.
  • Options for modular or phased works that can evolve with the building over time.

We can collaborate directly with your design team or lead the creative process end-to-end.

Private collector experience

For private homes and galleries, the process is intentionally intimate, allowing the work to echo your collections, architecture, and daily rituals.

  • Statement pieces for key living spaces, stairwells, or garden settings.
  • Smaller, contemplative works for studies, bedrooms, or private viewing rooms.
  • Considered framing, plinth design, or mounting to complement your interiors.

We can work from photographs and measurements if a site visit is not possible.

Creative collaborations

Alongside direct commissions, we welcome collaborations with architects, designers, and curators to embed artworks into wider spatial narratives.

  • Concept development woven into early design stages.
  • Co-authored projects where multiple practices share authorship.
  • Curated ensembles of works across a building or campus.

Timeline & project management

Every commission includes a clear structure for communication, approvals, and review points so you can follow the project with confidence.

Indicative timelines

Smaller wall-based works typically require 8–12 weeks from concept approval, while large-scale sculptures or installations can range from 4–9 months depending on complexity and fabrication requirements.

Milestones & updates

We agree key milestones at the outset—concept sign-off, material confirmation, mid-production review, and pre-installation check—to keep the project moving in a measured, transparent way.

Communication channels

Updates are shared via email, with the option for scheduled calls or video reviews at pivotal stages. For larger teams, we can coordinate with your chosen project platform.

Budget & contracts

Once the scope is agreed, you receive a detailed proposal outlining fees, production costs, and installation considerations, along with payment schedules and terms.

How to start your commission
